James Lansdell

Born and raised in Laguna Beach, James Lansdell’s career at Sawdust began in 1971; although after a long hiatus, he didn’t begin exhibiting again until 2011. In between, he worked for 20 years in commercial painting, and then pursued a career in education until budget cutbacks prompted his return to art. He created his first piece in 20 years when his mother fell ill, completing the painting at her bedside. And that’s when it all started again.

Lansdell will most likely be found with his easel, interacting and sharing experiences with all who pass by his booth at Sawdust. Inspired by nature, Lansdell often depicts serene aquatic scenery. Recently, he began using grouting to add heavy texture to his paintings, inspired by the sea foam on breaking waves.
