For more than four decades, the Artists Benevolence Fund has been one of Laguna Beach’s most meaningful traditions, and proof that even in a town full of fiercely independent creatives, no one truly goes it alone.
“It all began when the Sawdust community came together to help a fellow artist facing a terminal illness,” recalls David Nelson, current chair of the Artists Benevolence Fund. That simple act—passing the hat for a neighbor in need—sparked something lasting: a fund offering financial support to Laguna Beach artists during life’s toughest moments, from illness and accidents to displacement and natural disasters.
Since then, the Artists Benevolence Fund has quietly stepped in to help artists get back on their feet, replacing lost tools, covering rent, and providing a financial lifeline so artists can return to making a living making art. While it was founded by Sawdust artists, today the Fund serves all Laguna Beach artists who qualify.
At the heart of this generosity is the Fund’s annual art auction, returning Sunday, August 10th at the Sawdust Art Festival. It’s a signature Laguna event—creative, communal, and deeply personal. Every dollar raised goes directly to supporting artists in need. Entry is free for anyone attending, and you might just leave with a beautiful piece of art—from glasswork and paintings to jewelry and photography.

Because at its core, the Fund is about more than art. It’s about the people who make it—a compassionate community that rallies to help them in times of need.
Looking ahead, the Fund is thinking creatively about its future, exploring new ways to engage supporters, like a possible golf tournament for those who prefer tee times to bidding. But in the meantime, preparations for this year’s auction are already underway, and a preview of featured works will be shared soon to tempt early interest.
