FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
‘Sculpt Your Family’ Workshop Friday at Top of the World Elementary
Media, photographers invited: Longtime Sawdust artist Patti Klingenmeier will lead clay sculpture project; more than 150 people anticipated
Laguna Beach, CA – The Sawdust Art Festival’s Education Committee is teaming with Top of the World PTA to present a free “Sculpt Your Family” workshop for Top of the World Elementary School students and their families on Friday, April 24 from 6-7:30 p.m. All children and their parents are welcome; reservations are required and space is limited.
Klingenmeier, a 35-year Sawdust exhibitor known for her polymer clay figures called “Patti’s People,” will lead a workshop for children and their parents to create likenesses of themselves and build a family unit. The project, in its second year, is designed to bring the arts back to the classroom after recent cutbacks.
“We don’t have art programs like we used to have,” Klingenmeier said. “Now that we don’t, I think the Sawdust has to step up and offer them.”
Christina Shook, a workshop organizer and member of the Top of the World PTA, said, “It’s a unique opportunity for families to create art together. Making art encourages creativity and bonding through the generations.” She added, “There’s no art teacher at our school. For a creative and artistic town that’s so well-endowed, it’s shocking that we have no arts program.”
Journalists are welcome to attend and capture what’s expected to be a fun, heart-warming event, the second in a school series called Family Art Night. Sawdust artists Mary Keating and Rosanne Nitti are expected to attend and assist, as well as five high school volunteers from Laguna Beach High School.
This workshop is part of a continuing series of year-round outreach programs sponsored by the Sawdust Art Festival. In March, Sawdust artists led a project at Kinoshita Elementary School in San Juan Capistrano. Four Sawdust artists taught 228 students how to paint a sunflower painting like Vincent van Gogh over the course of two days. It was the third year of the project at Kinoshita Elementary School.
The Sawdust Art Festival holds Studio Art Classes every Friday at Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., as well as four-week, intensive workshops. Media include glassblowing, ceramics, painting, jewelry and fused glass. For information, call (949) 494-3030 or visit www.sawdustartfestival.org/studio-classes.
The 49th annual Sawdust Art Festival takes place Friday, June 26-Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015.
