The Sawdust Magic Room
Sawdust glass artist Liz Avalon has created a very special experience for Sawdust visitors this year. Her first conceptual art installation, the Sawdust Magic Room, is a kaleidoscope of color and optical illusions that will make you feel as though you have been transported to a completely different time and space. Located in booth 312, the Magic Room experience is free of charge, and guests are welcome to take pictures and video inside.
This is Liz Avalon’s 3rd summer as a Sawdust exhibitor, but she has been coming to the Sawdust festival every year since she was a small child. Inspiration for her artwork comes from a fascination with the moments and spaces where the human psyche meets the natural world and experiences wonder. Her primary medium is glass, which she cuts, carves and paints to make beautiful sculptures, jewelry and now – interactive mixed-media installations!
In creating the Magic Room, Liz has shared not only her artistic vision but has fully embraced the creative freedom that the Sawdust Festival allows its artists. Starting months before the festival opened, Liz started collecting donations of materials to complete her vision and built her entire booth space to house the installation. An exceptional example of creative reuse, guests are surprised to learn that the Magic Room is made of more than 90 percent reclaimed glass and mirror that would otherwise have been headed for the landfill.
