Artist Statement

I am a mixed media artist who’s work begins with original photographs or watercolor paintings, often inspired by the natural beauty of my hometown, Laguna Beach, and evolves through the tactile addition of hand-stitched embroidery.

Nature is my greatest inspiration. I’m drawn to the colors, textures, and quiet moments found in the environment around me. Each piece starts with a visual that catches my eye—whether it’s a wave, a sunset, or a cactus bloom—and I use embroidery to highlight and transform that moment, layering in unexpected color and texture. The thread becomes a way of reframing the image, inviting the viewer to pause, look closer, and see something familiar in a new way.

Artist Bio

As a second-generation Sawdust Festival artist, Brittney Silva has art in her blood. Following in the creative footsteps of her mother, Sherry Bullard, who has been a part of the Sawdust Festival for over 43 years, she proudly debuted her own work at the 2024 summer show, making it a true family affair. Sharing a booth with her husband Nevada Silva, a talented metal artist, her participation marks a continuation of family tradition and a celebration of shared creativity.

When she’s not showcasing her art, Brittney is deeply dedicated to arts education. She works with several non-profits that nurture creativity in the community, including LOCA (Laguna Outreach Community Arts) in Laguna Beach and the Heartwood Foundation in San Juan Capistrano—an enrichment program close to her heart, as it also supports her oldest son. She teaches weekly children’s art classes, finding joy and inspiration in guiding young minds as they express themselves through color, texture, and imagination. For Brittney teaching is as fulfilling as creating, and she treasures the spark of originality in every child’s “mini masterpiece.”
