Artist Statement

My process is a tactile dialogue that begins long before a brush touches the surface. I view the
canvas not as a static backdrop, but as a living participant in the creative act. I meticulously
select which areas to gesso and which to leave raw, allowing the paint to either sit prominently
on the surface or bleed into the fibers through a natural staining process. This interplay of
textures allows me to “map” the emotional geography of a piece before color or line ever
emerges.

My method is defined by fluidity and physical transformation. I work with a heavily saturated,
wet canvas—sometimes even washing a piece in the shower to restart and refine the work. I
am not afraid to deconstruct my work — I frequently use sandpaper or power sanders to strip
back layers, altering the fabric’s texture and changing how it receives new pigment. This
rhythmic cycle of building up and stripping away creates a profound bond between myself and
the material, resulting in a painting that is an inseparable extension of my own movement and
intent.

My paintings are the result of a physical struggle and a rhythmic collaboration with fabric and
fluid—a process that makes me feel truly inseparable from the work itself.

Artist Bio

Art is my sanctuary.

Coming of age as a neurodivergent girl in the suburban Sixties, I found MOMA and the subways
of NYC to be both safe havens and sources of inspiration. As a young woman I escaped to
Canada and began to find my hand and build a body of work in Toronto, where my work was
hailed for its originality in finding sublimity in the mundane.

Life as a single mother caused me to return to the States and focus my creative energies on
building a secure home for my children. When my youngest son left that home for college, he
and his brothers presented me with a set of paints and the wish that I return to the sanctuary
of art.

I look forward to sharing the products of my inspiration with others.
