Artist Statement
I have enjoyed working with clay for most of my life. I love the flexibility of the clay in my hands and the way I can transform it from a material that is soft from the earth, to something that is durable and long-lasting. I consider myself to be a folk artist. I love hand crafts that are made around the world, and I feel that I represent that part of the art world that is indigenous to my surroundings. The beauty of the natural world is my inspiration and I aspire to make things that bring joy to others.
Artist Bio
I am a 5th generation native Californian and a third-generation Laguna Beach resident. Art has always been a part of my life, and the creative spirit has run deep in my family.
I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with an art degree (ceramics emphasis), and I did a summer session at Artes Plásticas, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. I have traveled extensively and visited over sixty countries. I started my ceramics business, “Plum Foolish”, shortly after I graduated. I was told by some that I couldn’t support myself making silly clay items that nobody needed. “Plum Foolish” has survived for 47 years now. I have shown my work in galleries, museums and stores across the United States. People have collected my work and appreciate my attention to detail and my sense of humor.
Exhibiting at the Sawdust Festival for nearly 5 decades has put me in touch with a wonderful group of fellow artists and an appreciative audience from all over the world.
