Artist Statement
Rosalie Marsh-Boinus, long-time Laguna Beach artist has been featured at the Sawdust Art Festival since 2006. Her inspiration comes from fusing post French Impressionism, German Expressionism and Surrealist Abstraction into what she calls “Modern Expressionism,” Rosalie paintings feature female-centric subjects reminiscent of a bygone era. Creating her own unique realm, she invites viewers into a kaleidoscopic world where female figures reveal powerful, expressions, resonating with a distinctive, dreamlike aura. Mysteriously reverberating with intuitive and psychological inner emotions of the soul, her female-centric oeuvre captures the essence of the female spirit.
Fusing nineteenth century precision, she is influenced by sophisticated women of the past. Artistically creating a dialogue between traditional forms and contemporary expression, Rosalie cajoles us to question “who” are these women and what is their personal story. By creating visual stories of close-up, stylized, fashionable women who wear chic chapeaux, she integrates patterns and textures from her imagination.
She loves using found objects, crushed leaves, sticks, jewelry and material to enhance her paintings. Her latest series of Four French Ladies were featured at a January 2025 exhibit at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery In New York City. She is continually inspired by the world, nature and history.
Her latest series of “Lady in a Vase” paintings have us thinking about how nature and the female intertwine. But nature has a way of destroying that beauty, i.e., the fires in Los Angeles early this year.
She continues to be inspired as she plans her next series of paintings to be shown this summer at the Sawdust Art Festival.
Artist Bio
Fused by her inspiration from the German Expressionists and Post-Impressionists, Rosalie calls herself a Modern Expressionist. For her, painting and creating is a journey to an unknown destination where she can release her true feelings. She uses line, color and texture to show a connection to who we are and where we are going. Her paintings evoke an emotion or story which the viewer can interpret through movement and form. Some or her series of paintings evoke an expression of time that has been forgotten. Her representative work includes portraits of people painted in 1920’s Parisian fashion, abstract paintings exploiting current social issues and abstract landscape paintings.
Rosalie has been working in mixed media over 20 years, using clay, gesso, sticks, leaves and other natural materials to enhance her paintings and give texture to them.
Rosalie also creates original one-of-a-kind vintage bags which were designed when she was recovering from breast cancer. She loves to use vintage fabric, old jewelry pieces, lace and other found objects to put together these artistic bags. When each bag is finished, she cleverly names them. Each bag is a unique design and she never duplicates the style. She has created and sold hundreds of bags since 2006 and is an inspiration to other cancer survivors.
