Artist Bio

Professional Caricature Artist for 25 years, serving the Laguna Beach community and its visitors for 15 of those, on the beaches, the village, and private events. Fairly new to the Sawdust Festival, now with a Cafe-themed booth featuring quickdraw portraiture, visionary art, cartoon abstract paintings, and cartoony tribal masks from repurposed queen palm fronds.

My caricatures are drawn on heavy card stock, using a Tombow brush pen. The card stock will hold up better than paper, and the brush pen has a supple brush-like tip that can produce a variety of line weights and styles.

My paintings are mostly acrylics on canvas or board, with some oils and watercolors. I use the discarded fronds of queen palm trees for their unique mask shape, cleaning them up, trimming them, and painting faces on them, often bringing out the faces already suggested by the natural contours and markings. A great organic shape that can be used to portray any animal or natural form.

In my visionary and cartoon abstract paintings, I seek to connect with a primal instinct deep within all of us, which was stimulated for me by early experiences of others’ visionary art. I hope the pieces will awaken the same spirit within those who view them, a silent eternal voice from the past.

I mainly hope recipients of my caricatures will laugh. I attempt to draw people as their friends see them, and I hope they come away with new confidence in their appearance.
The sawdust festival offers a great deal of support and framework that I lacked as an independent artist. Mainly, the great and loving family of artists that helps each other succeed. I first visited the festival at age 6 or 7, and still have great memories of being inspired by it.
