Artist Statement

For me, painting is my expression of the beauty in life that surrounds me. I want my work to explain itself. I do not want to explain my work.

Artist Bio

Paulette Auster, a native Californian grew up in South Orange County, Her influence came from both parents, her mother, an artist and father a straight-ahead jazz drummer, potter and jack of many trades left her no choice but to pursue her destiny. Early childhood memories of her mother and other well-known local artists sketching a nude lying on a table while she peaked around a corner (hoping no one would see) instilled a fondness for human form. While attending Saddleback Community College she met her late husband artist Ken Auster who encouraged her in her art.

He taught her the art of serigraphy (the fine art term for silk-screen) applied to paper and fabric. Together they built his silkscreen business until the market went soft and he decided to re-invent himself which led him to painting en plein air. Paulette continued to follow her dream to attend Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

She forged ahead and submitted her portfolio to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1994 and graduated in April 1997.

Paulette formerly owned and operated Laguna Art Workshops an instructor-artist workshop program in Laguna Beach featuring the finest art instructors in the country. After caring for her late husband she has returned to focus her energy on her own work.

While pursuing her art career, she returned to her music and managing the Auster Studio/Gallery 133.
